I love love love the 'No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' series. I love Mma Ramotswe, I love her Botswana, I love the characters, I love the writing, I love these books. They made me laugh, they made me cry, and I normally do not do either of these things. I plan on buying the rest post haste and also everything else Smith has written. The TV series is also really really good!

'Demon's Lexicon' was also a rollicking good read - I read it straight through and am still kind of dazed, days later. If you've read any of Sarah's Harry Potter fanfic (if you haven't, and want to, drop me a note. You will not regret it) you're familiar with the tight, achy feeling she creates - all slow dawning realizations and subtle characterization and people acting stupid in believable ways. And also humor! Really funny humor. This book has these things in spades and, now that she's got the world building out of the way, I expect the next book will blow my mind. Yay!

Hah! I knew just from the summary on the book jacket that Sarah Rees Brennan was in fandom -- I bought the book on the strength of that, despite the ugly coverart, and I'm enjoying it very much (I'm actually enjoying it more for having peeked at the end and discovered [SPOILER], because the entire story is much more nuanced and complex if you know that bit of info going in, and she works the effectsof it in really well).

Would you mind tellling me, via PM or email or something or other non-public, who in fandom Brennan is/was? Because her book was enjoyable enough that now I'd like to go search out her fic (ideally, I like to read the fic of fan-writers gone pro *first*, before spending actual money on them, but the last two pages of Lexicon made it look so awesome that I couldn't wait and had to have it right then).
