It's (Inter)National Ask An Atheist Day, apparently!

So if you've got a burning question about atheism* (or skepticism, we'll throw that in too), ask away.

Alternatively! Ask me to rec a song to fit your mood and I'll try to oblige.

* note: the only atheist I can speak for is myself.

Because Zan just did it and I *cough* just happened to have the photos sitting around...

My bag! It's from Fossil, a couple years old, and very sturdy. I love it.

effex: Working now (Working now)
I don't rec fanfic here much anymore (that's what delicious is for) but I finished reading two Avatar AUs over the weekend and folks, I am excite.

Huh. It turns out they're by the same person, I only just realized. Well.

Imagine the Ocean by Damkianna: Hakoda found the boy in the ice eight days before Kya went into labor. A 100,000+ word rewrite of Book One, with Katara as the Avatar. Amazing. Wonderful use of female characters, both canon and OC. Wonderful expansion of the Avatar world. Wonderful, wonderful look at Katara, growing up and growing into her role as Avatar. (Note: Yes, Aang's dead and it's sometimes hard to handle. Yes, he still plays a major part in the story.) In short: wonderful.

Big Damn Heroes by Damkianna: Katara pushes past the curtains that block off the bridge - they have got to get a new door fitted - and stops behind Toph's chair. "I take it we didn't drop out of hyperspace on purpose," she says. (Aka THE GAANG IN SPACE.) That last part is all you really need to know. GAANG! IN SPACE! It's not quite a crossover with Firefly, more Firefly flavored (or as the notes say, '"Firefly, but with Asians!" ... and Inuit, of course.'). I want a million more stories in this 'verse. Hell, can we swap just it for Firefly?

And now, the first half of my responses to the 15 'ships meme:

The Pairings )

[personal profile] pseudo_tsuga:

2, 3, and 7 get stranded on a desert island. Who makes fire? Who finds food? Who stubbornly refuses to do anything beside prepare for rescue? )

3 have to collaborate on a school project. Do they get it done or just make out all the time? )

1 and 10 are babysitting. What horrors unfold? )

[personal profile] zanzando:

7 & 12 meet the Doctor (whichever incarnation you like) while he's on a much needed vacation. Naturally, they must team up and save the world (probably not Earth) from certain destruction! )

Prompt me

effex: Super hero behavior (Super hero behavior)
The plan for tonight is to make a blanket nest and get some writing done, starting with the prompts back at my 15 'ships meme. To get out of this not-writing rut, you know? So if you want to leave prompts*, now's the time!

* by which I mean 'please, please leave some prompts'.

...speaking of writing: if any of you know your way around the Marvel U, can you drop me a comment? I'm looking for info on supers, teams, and/or organizations outside the US/UK (specifically Mexico/Central/South America and the Caribbean). Google has failed me and the Official Handbooks are surprisingly difficult to track down.

And hell, while I'm at it, does anyone know anything about working in a theater's scene shop?

Meme time!

effex: Fandom compass (Fandom compass)
Now for something a little more romance-y (it's the day after V-Day, that totally makes it less kitschy)! Cobbled together from a couple recent memes:

I've got a list of 15 of my favorite 'ships - some are slash, some are femslash, some are het, one's a threesome! Ask me questions, or give me scenarios involving those characters (Like: What happens when 1 and 11 go on a double date? How do 9 and 15 handle an alien invasion? 3 goes shopping for sex toys.). I will answer them and hilarity will ensue.

(fandoms: Hayate x Blade, Runaways, Harry Potter, Ranma 1/2, Gunnerkrigg Court, Doctor Who, Howl's Moving Castle, Girl Genius, Blue Beetle, Gundam Wing, One Piece, Young Avengers, Community, Sanctuary, and The Losers.)

~*~

And another one, bonus! From all over (though I got the including snippits bit from [personal profile] cofax7): Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous.

* SSB*B - so gratuitous: Theme: 'Flora Gave Me Fairest Flowers.' I can totally translate that into 'investigating botched fertility rites.'

* notgreenorblue - Blue Beetle/Young Avengers Crossover: "Dibs." Spiderman said, breaking the stunned silence. "So many dibs. I always wanted my own Young Avenger."

* Inception/HikaGo Crossover: THING THAT GOES WRONG THE THIRD: Akira goes after him.

* Losers fic - Suckers and Saints: “What, the Blow Pop?” Jensen asked, following his gaze. “What did it ever do to you?”

* losers flaffle: “This is Radio Free Jensen, coming to you from the glamorous upstairs library. Any of you folks have your comms on?"

* Dresden Files epic: The same two scenes over and over again, both with the sharp edges that marked them as true dreaming. (this is the only line in the damn document, what.)

* SoaT snippets - death hadn't done his sanity any favors. (SoaT = Strangers on a Train)

* hikago/xxxholic crossover: "I have a message for you," the shorter boy said, holding out a folded piece of thin rice paper, "from Fujiwara no Sai. He says he's very sorry but he's gotten into some trouble and could use your help. Only more flowery." He shook the paper slightly and the faint scent of sakura blossoms wafted onto the evening air.

In other news, the Great Dallas Freeze is easing up - it's still cold as balls outside but the roads are clearer. Got a ride into work, which is good because I was going stir crazy. Woooooooo.

Happy Thanksgiving, fellow USians! I am ensconced at my parent's ranch, hanging out and digesting the fantastic dinner my sister put together (18 separate appetizers, dishes, and desserts, NOM. Also, oof, full). I'm glad to be with my family (and that they're well enough to be here) and I'm glad for the friends that aren't here today and I'm glad for all of you (some of whom fit in the previous category - you get gladness twice over!).

Holiday felicitations aside, it's important to remember that the myths we tell ourselves about Thanksgiving are just that, myths. Inaccurate and damaging myths.

~*~

And for something completely different (via [personal profile] crossedwires) - name a character from one of my fandoms/shows/anything and I'll give you:

(a) Three facts about them from my personal fanon.
(b) A reason he/she sucks.
(c) A reason he/she is amazing.
(d) Five things that I'd like to see happen to them.
(e) Five people that I can't ship that character with and why.

C'mon, we're about to watch the new Karate Kid, Jaden Smith is cute but not so cute I don't need a distraction.

I still don't have any food icons.
effex: Why? (Why?)
So this weekend wash an utterly anti-climatic wash, I didn't get any work done (oh hai, looming deadlines), I promised [personal profile] nepenthe that I'd buy her Comic-con ticket for her while she's at work and then left my card at home (I really, really hope they take Paypal) and I turn twenty-six in nine days and apparently freaking out about birthdays is something I do now.

I AM FULL OF FEELINGS. SAD, CRANKY FEELINGS.

Please, rlist, give me a drabble prompt, ask me a question, request a rec, write something, link me something, rec some music, whatever strikes your fancy. I could use some cheering up; would like to give people something.

(And shit, I never said thanks for the comments over at the love meme. But I'm thinking about it now and I am grateful and full of affection, thank you.)

ETA: Wow, are these last three posts a roller-coaster or what?

Internet, I am bored. So, a meme! Two memes, even! Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory.

1: Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really!

2: Comment with two characters I'm familiar with (like these or these, and I'll tell you how they first kissed.
effex: Smooches (Smooches)
So over on my LJ flist, [livejournal.com profile] thehoyden put up a porn roulette post in attempt to give away some of her porn. And at first I was sad I saw it too late to comment! But then I remembered that I have too much porn as it is. That I can never seem to get rid of (even though it's quality stuff! The porn market on eBay seems to have bottomed out, is all). And I'm moving soon. So I'm gonna copy her instead.

How to play:

1.) You must live in the U.S.
2.) You paypal me $5 for shipping
3.) I send you a mystery box of BL manga (all Japanese language, folks)! And maybe some random doujinshi. YOU DON'T KNOW, THAT'S WHY IT'S PORN ROULETTE.
4.) Limited to the first five commenters.

Possibly I will do another one (or a shonen roulette or a shojo roulette or... really, I have a lot of manga) once we see how this one goes.

Comment away! I'll PM the first five with questions and details.

Icon Meme

effex: Lazy daze (Lazy daze)
From [personal profile] zanzando:

1. Comment to this entry and I will pick 7 of your icons.
2. Make an entry in your own journal and talk about the icons I picked!

[personal profile] zanzando asked me about:

Eddie/Kid Devil from Teen Titans (although this particular story is in Blue Beetle), creating a distraction at the (non-existent) Houston Space Center's launch facility. This is my go-to science/tech icon and I <3 it lots. Made by [livejournal.com profile] morgicons.

Reno! From Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, looking all coy and quoting Monty Python (he does not actually do this in the movie, alas). I use this one for all sorts of things - sexual innuendo, flirtatiousness and, of course, conversations about underwear. Made by [personal profile] ciceqi.

Image and quote from XKCD - sometimes I use this icon as encouragement in situations that aren't too serious, sometimes I use it to mock situations that aren't too serious. Made by [livejournal.com profile] halcyonjazz.

Ha! This is my gratuitous Axel/Roxas icon (part of my gratuitous [pairing] icon series!) and also my ridiculous!emo!LOVE SONG! icon. Axel's good like that. Made by [livejournal.com profile] ace_van

I'm not a big fan of team sports - I understand the rules for most of them and can follow the games, but it's just not my thing. Curling is the exception to this. I have no idea why. Made by [livejournal.com profile] winterlive.

Oh, Donna. This icon is for standing firm in the face of adversity; for the times I need to remember to hope. Made by dollowayward.

Taken from scans of the Super Dictionary, which is an actual thing. A wonderful, cracktastic thing. Icon is obviously for times Batman needs to be serious. Made by [livejournal.com profile] sluggirl

And I'll copy Zan on this bit - I'm adding a free-for-all option: ask me about any of my icons in a comment, and I'll explain those, too.

So! Anyone want to play?
effex: Books (Books)
via [personal profile] ciceqi - To quote: "Bold the ones you've read COMPLETELY, italicize the ones you've read part of. Watching the movie or the cartoon doesn't count. Abridged versions don't count either. BTW, according to the BBC if you've read 7 of these, you are above the average."

To the list! )

So that's... 25 out of 100, which I guess is better then 7 (seriously, 7?). And another 19 partially read. Although some of these are less 'books' and more 'a series of books and/or short stories and/or plays,' which I suspect is cheating.

EDIT: Did some research because, seriously, what's up with this list? Turns out it's from an article in the Guardian and is the result of a popular book poll. Which explains it, I guess.

* I am sick, but not sick enough to stay home from work. This is the worst kind of sick (you know. of the petty illnesses. it is not as bad as being sick sick).

* On upside, I was also not too sick to go on a date last night. It went well!

* Holy cheese but the energy bill is high this month. Have we really been running the heater that much?

* I've been watching TEDtalks on my ipod on the ride to work (I <3 my ipod) - Ryan Lobo: Photographing the hidden story was especially good.

* The more I think about it (and listen to his recent podcasts), the more I think I should take Dan Savage off my top 10 favorite internet people I don't actually know list. I like the frank way he talks about sex and relationships, but the guy has some seriously unexamined male privilege going on.

* I'm doing research for the PRINCESS project (which, seriously, needs a better codename) and could use some assistance finding articles/blogs on North Africa (Jasmine), Chinese-american communities (Mulan), street culture in NY and DC (Aladdin), etc. ) Ahaha, and this is just the tip of the research iceberg (also looking into: the FBI, Library of Congress, DC police department, Latin ([personal profile] cimorene, did we decide where Blanca was from?) cinema, LP activist groups, the diplomatic community in DC, professional investigators, opera, organized crime, and on and on).

* And a meme, ganked from [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory: Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Favorite character, favorite moment, unpopular opinion, something about a fic of mine... whatever. Wackiness encouraged.
effex: How we roll in the shire (How we roll in the shire)
I've done this meme before, but I find constructing it unreasonably entertaining, so.

Step 1: Put your iTunes or equivalent on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

TADA!

Photobucket

No, I did not clean it up for company, yes, it actually looks like that. And yes, my Documents subfolders are just as clean. Everything must have a place! This applies only to my computers, I would never do a 'take a shot of your bedroom' meme. Because it is a mess.

Background image cleverly stolen from the company iMac. I really want to change it to this, still debating whether I could get away with it at work.

Right?

No one will ever see this to play, but it looked fun (and it's late), so...

Ganked from [profile] maldoror_gw

Step 1: Put your iTunes or equivalent on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

Have skipped several instrumental pieces, and non-english songs that were too fast to catch (and defeated my google-fu). Some of these are covers, bonus points if you know which artist did the covering! Also, there are a couple of artists that showed up several times, even though I was working with a playlist of over 500 songs. I am deeply amused, and a little scared.
