Tried going to work yesterday and today, got sent home both time because sick. Go home, Effex. Nobody likes a martyr, Effex. You're contaminating the merchandise, Effex.

Bah. Guess I'm spending my weekend being just sick enough to be cranky and uncomfortable. I'll make a trip to the store tomorrow, then it's juice and snacks and tv and bed for me. Which... sounds pretty good, actually. Aside from the ick.

Chicago just had a huge ass thunder storm roll through, which did fun things like flood intersections and fuck with the power on the El lines. I live roughly 3 miles from work and my trip home involved a bus ride (stalled due to flooding), a brisk walk in the dark, and a train ride (stalled due to I don't even know, something about the switches needing to be manually changed?). It took more than an hour longer than it usually does.

Listening to other people in my car (Pink Line, woo), I was lucky to get on the train at all - something had fucked with the outbound tracks and they'd been stuck circling the loop for half an hour. I caught the first one to make it out.

Fortunately it was mostly done raining by time I got off work. Being soaking wet would have crossed the line from frustrating adventure to FUCK NO WHY.
effex: TV has the fun (TV has the fun)
Fuck, what was I going to post for today? Uh, I had therapy today, that went pretty well. Chicago is finally cooling the fuck off, GIVE ME ALL THE AUTUMN. I.... Oh!

The thing about iPads and MacBook Airs are that they are light and very convenient for watching Hulu/Netflix in bed. Too convenient. I've been watching old episodes of The Voice, because the singing is pretty and the braining requirement is 0, and 'one more episode/I'll just finish this battle' turns into 11pm, 12am, 1am.

So I'm instituting a 'No TV On The Bed On A Work Night' rule. It may need to expand to 'No TV On The Bed At All' or 'No Interneting On The Bed On A Work Night', because my self control is shot after 10pm.

I'm spending a couple of days in Atlanta (well, Roswell, which is just to the north) visiting my dad and it is ridiculously, stupidly pretty out here. Trees! Trees everywhere! There are a ton of people living out here and you can't see them because 1: hills and 2: TREES. Plus flowers and vine things and tiny winding roads and perfect weather (after it stopped raining). It's exactly the mini-vacation I wanted.

I've also been working on transferring my webcomic feeds from Reader to Netvibes - it's only been 24 hours, but it seems to be doing the job so far. Although it doesn't seem to have picked up today's Nimona update yet...

I'm following 26 webcomics. There are another 14 in my 'check out/catch up on sometime soon' file. Webcomics are some of my very favorite things and there are so many! I should get working on an updated cool comics on the internet post.

My sister is getting married in October! She's been with the guy forever and they've already bought a house together so functionally nothing will change, but it's still very exciting. She wants me to be her Maid of Honor, which is also very exciting!

She also wants me to wear a dress, which is... less so.

The thing is, I haven't worn a dress since senior prom, circa 2003. I've gradually faded 'femme' out of my wardrobe - I wear jeans and button downs and polo shirts, dress shirts/vests/slacks if I'm going out and want to impress. I don't call myself butch - I still do makeup and nail polish and limited jewelry - but I'm definitly not femme. I'm also, finally, the most comfortable I've ever been in my body.

My parents get this, a little (although I'm pretty sure they think it's a sexuality thing, not gender expression), and are backing my 'No Dresses' stance. We're working on some sort of tunic + pants compromise, which'll be a pain to put together in my size + her wedding colors but still better than anything from David's Bridal.

This is the first time anything like this has come up with my family, so I'm still sorting though my comfort zone vs my sister's feelings vs general familial harmony. It's tricky. Hopefully I'll do okay (and find a fucking tunic that works).

This weekend I:

1) Was sick. But not too sick! Just head-coldy enough to be unpleasant. And contagious, probably.

2) Typed up ~1300 words of fic, which is about half of what I have (hand) written. You'll never guess what fandom it's in. (Unless you're [personal profile] nepenthe, in which case I've been spamming you all night.)

3) Watched a shit-ton of Yogscast episodes.

4) Built a giant castle on the family Minecraft server. I named it Procrastination Hall. Dad was very impressed.

In Fannish Review: Uh. I was on a Fandomspotting podcast? And worked on it generally behind the scenes, though that was earlier in the year and not nearly as much as other folks. Also I watched/read some things and posted about them.

In RL Review: I moved to Chicago, was unemployed for a while, got a job, got an apartment, got a roommate, got a cat, got a therapist.

There's a lot I didn't do - make serious headway on my book and my comic, find some freelance gigs, do more fannish stuff, make friends outside of work. And there was some stuff that fucking sucked - two of my cats died and my grandparents are sicker. But, as my therapist keeps reminding me to remind myself, overall it's been a busy, successful year.

Things to try for in 2013: Get out more. Continue working on creative projects. Post more, even if it's random faffing. Get my ears pierced*. Take care of myself.

* Two in each lobe and one on the right upper helix. Why start small?

For all y'all - I hope your good things carry over, your bad things stay in 2012, and may you have a fucking awesome New Year.

* I'm going to be on the Fandomspotting livecast this week! We're going to be talking about The Best Manga/Anime You’ve Never Heard Of, it'll be fab. I'll try not to talk about Hayate x Blade the entire time.

* I am writing and drawing at an agonizingly slow pace, which is better than no pace I guess. It feels like my creativity's all blocked up, sucks sucks sucks bleh woe.

* My parents came to visit for Thanksgiving! We did a lot of walking around, a lot of eating, and a lot of reading quietly in their hotel room. My family parties hard.

That's... it, I guess? I really need to get back in the talking to people no really updating habit, this is ridiculous. I know I've got at least one overly long webcomics post in me.

Huh, apparently my paid Dreamwidth account expired? Dammit - on one hand, money. On the other, icons.

* I'm still all about my job. Awesome coworkers! A non-abusive work environment! And I've been getting steadily more responsibility, which is cool. I mean, I'm in charge of the entire store + shutting down/locking up + a junior coworker one night a week, which was terrifying at first but has been going well.

* I'm writing a romance novel. Well, I'm writing the notes for a romance novel and spamming [personal profile] nepenthe with them, but she's instructed convinced me to try NaNoWriMo with it. I'm going to give it a shot, alternating with the script for my comic.

* I got the time off I wanted for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I'll be able to hang out with my parents when they visit for the first and go home for the latter.

* Speaking of, my parent's got me a mattress as an early birthday present, on account of my air mattress dying horribly. I have been sleeping on an air mattress for eight months, you guys, this real one is like a dream.

* I've been watching... a lot of reality TV, mixed in with Elementary and Gravity Falls. Mostly Hotel Hell and - wait, no. You have to see this:

Yes.

There was a hipster musician dude holding forth on the bus this morning. I mostly ignored him until he started talking about Oppa Gangnam Style, which is apparently 'by some random Korean dude' who 'randomly uploaded his video to YouTube' and is now a 'big deal'. Which proves YouTube as a platform for artists or something, I don't know, I was too busy being consumed by wrong, wrong, you are wrong.

Seriously, even I know who PSY is.

My local grocery - la Casa del Pueblo in Pilsen, which is possibly the best grocery in Chicago - has a large rack of discounted produce. It's packs of whatever's about to go bad; peppers, stew mixes, last week a shit ton of apples that I'm still kicking myself for not buying (apple sauce!), all for one or two dollars. Yesterday they had lemons (8 for a dollar), so I got a bunch and grabbed a box of strawberries. Spent the evening juicing lemons and watching Veronica Mars. Ended up with two quarts of lemonade and another two of strawberry-lemonade. Mmmmm.

Today I'm making another batch of oat maple-bacon muffins. Weekends (shush, Monday is totally my weekend) when I feel like making shit are the best.

Just remembered that, holy fuck, I live in Chicago! I can go to Vividcon! Except, $90. And it's this weekend, so chances of spots still being open are slim.

Well, I can go next year! And it's a good excuse to spend an evening drinking, rewatching vids, and waiting for this year's vids to hit the net (not that I need an excuse).

If anyone's in Chicago and wants to hang out and/or wants to know things to do/places to eat (based on my grand 6 months of knowledge), let me know!

I've been rocking the hermit lifestyle lately - go to work, come home and read/draw/play minecraft/watch cartoons, go to work again - because 1) it's hot outside and 2) I'm broke.

My parents + sibs (Dallas, 105 degrees) and [personal profile] nepenthe (Phoenix, 113 degrees) have no sympathy when I complain about 90 degree weather, but! It's less hot, sure, but still too hot to do much walking around.

Case in point: I went to Navy Pier with my Aunt and second cousin on Monday. We rode the Ferris Wheel, played some mini-golf, and rode the water taxi - it was fun! I also sweated buckets, made some poor eye-rubbing choices, and ended up with an eye infection. It was... super gross, you guys. Just, ugh.

Case in point 2: Dad visited a couple of weeks ago and we went on the absolutely fabulous Architecture Boat Tour. And got majorly sunburned. I've only just stopped peeling.

Now, you might say sensible clothing, less eye makeup, and sunscreen would have prevented all these things and... you'd be right. Moving on!

It's starting to cool down, at least - weather forecast says that we're heading into 80-85 degree days, which is much more my speed. So I need to 1) make a list of stuff to do and 2) get some exercise in. I haven't been walking as much and I'm starting to feel it.

First item on my 'Adventur' (100% stolen from [personal profile] copperbadge) List: The Adler Planetarium's having a Curiosity landing party! The Adler Planetarium's also impossible to get to, especially at midnight, so I will... stay home and have my own landing party. Virtually! With alcohol and snacks and [personal profile] nepenthe and possibly my Dad. And anyone who's online and watching, of course. Google chat for everybody!

I'm putting my money on [personal profile] copperbadge's latest post spawning a wave of fannish reminesance - it's certainly got me trying to pinpoint my transition from 'geek' to 'fannish geek'.

My first con was Anime Expo 2000 when I was 15, but I'm pretty sure I was reading fic before that. I must have started just after discovering manga/anime, which lead to buying Japanese language manga which lead to fan translations* which led to the great wide Internet. I got the second issue of Animerica Extra when it hit the stands, that was pretty close to the start, so we'll call it 1998. 14 years. Half my life.

God, who here remembers Animerica Extra? And the fight over flipped manga? And getting tapes through the fansub underground? Oh man, and YYH DJs in English, that site changed my life. And Talya Firedancer and White Cat and Bishonenink and Ruaki**. And sex scenes being called lemons. And memorizing the different Gundam Wing pairings (1x2 vs 2x1, 3x4, and my beloved rarepair 2x5). And the RanmaxRyoga archive.

I'm trying to remember when I started transitioning to media fandom - some time in collage, I think. Probably with Harry Potter, there were a lot of anime fans writing for it. Or maybe Sleeps With Coyote's stuff? She was branching out around that time.

The two people I've followed the longest, at least 9 years*** continuously, are [personal profile] copperbadge and [tumblr.com profile] chirart. That's... amazing. Surreal, but amazing.

*ahaha, which I used to print out and keep in massive binders, so I could have them in one hand and the manga in the other. The days before scanslations were dark days.

**who I sent my ~first ever fanfic~ when she running a Pokemon archive. I am intensely grateful she turned me down.

***shit, [personal profile] nepenthe, isn't that about when we met? Late 2003/2004? 9 years of epic friendship.

effex: That's hot, folks! (That's hot folks!)
I have discovered that living in an un-air conditioned apartment while temps are in the 90s will not, in fact, kill me. I'm as surprised as anyone! I was pretty sure I was a delicate hothouse (icebox?) flower!

I have also discovered that living in an un-air conditioned apartment while temps are in the 90s is some bullshit. Roommate and I pooled funds to buy an A/C off of Amazon. It cannot get here fast enough.
effex: Live a life less ordinary (Live a life less ordinary)
I'm on a bus to Des Moines! And then on to Ames. I haven't been back to Iowa since I graduated in '06 and it looks... exactly the same. Mom assures me Ames and its environs haven't changed much either (Mom and my sister being in Ames being why I'm going there), which is good for nostalgia, I guess. We'll eat at all the old places and see all the old people.

The bus ride has been great so far - super cheap, no delays (unlike Amtrak), and the driver's great. And Iowa's very lush and green right now, good for watching as it rolls on by.
effex: here with you (here with you)
I swear someday I'll have the time/energy to be actively fannish again (instead of just mainlining fic. There is always time/energy for fic). Today is not that day but, ugh. Soon. I have fucking stories to write. I miss talking to you guys.

In the meantime, things are going well! We have a table and two chairs, so now there's a place to sit that isn't a bed. It seems like all I do is buy things - you need a lot of things when you're starting from scratch, I'd forgotten. Spent the weekend buying a mailbox and extension cords (because the oven needed to be plugged in and the only power outlet is on the other side of the room. This apartment is quirky) and cleaning supplies and food. And then cooking the food (roast chicken, roast beets, black beans, potatoes, yogurt popsicles... I'mma eat well this week). And getting my haircut and setting up dates with people on OKCupid and going to an art show and not talking to anyone, because at that point I was a little over-stimulated. [deep breath]

It's back to work tomorrow, which is going well - my feet/legs/back have finally adapted, everyone's still super nice, I'm learning fast, and the music's great. I dunno if my standards are low or I actually lucked into the coolest fucking job in Chicago, but I'm thrilled either way.
effex: let's just shine (let's just shine)
1) Work's going great - everyone's friendly, there's enough variety to keep it interesting, and I get to listen to music all day. It's a lot of standing and my feet aren't happy, but I bought comfy new Crocs (classy) and will hopefully get used to it.

2) I worked Record Store Day, mostly by checking bags and making popcorn. We were super busy the whole day, which warms my heart. Long live the record store!

3) I got off early enough to go see Otis Clay perform. He and his band were set up in a small, third floor art gallery with no seating, so it was about 100 people sitting on the floor while he performed unplugged. Man is 70 years old and still killing it, it was fucking amazing.

4) I signed the lease on a new place! And move in on Tuesday! Somehow! I have slightly more stuff than when I arrived - two suitcases has grown into two suitcases, two file boxes, and a bag of bedding - and I have no idea how I'm going to move it all. I've asked around and no one I know has a car, so maybe a taxi? Or multiple trips on the El (it's only two stops down, less than a mile)? It's times like this I wish I had a driver's license. And a lack of intense driving anxiety.

5) I've got two potential roommates coming over Tuesday night to look at the place. Fingers crossed.

It turns out Danny Pudi is even prettier in person. Also hilarious and charismatic and really sweet with his fans and ugh, I'm so glad I went to his talk.

He likes the fanfic, folks! And the fanvids and the fanart, especially this one (a girl had the shirt). And he kept pulling people up on stage to do the handshake and the biblioteca rap and crunking. And he showed a bunch of old family photos and told a bunch of embarrassing family stories, even though his mom was in the audience. And talked about being bi-racial and growing up in the Polish community and the number of guys named Sanjay he's played (4). And it was amazing.
